Steven Berk Obituary, Death Cause – The untimely passing of Dr. Steven L. Berk, Executive Vice President of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and Dean of the School of Medicine, occurred today (May 26), and his loved ones at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center are in shock at the news. This unspeakable tragedy has left our whole university community in shambles, and our hearts go out to his family as well as to our faculty, staff, and students as well as to the wider medical community. We offer our sympathies.
Because to his creative ideas and forward-thinking vision, the School of Medicine was able to grow, which also led to the creation of strong ties with our hospital partners. The work that Dr. Berk did in the areas of teaching, research, clinical treatment, and community involvement—all of which he accomplished with integrity, compassion, and quality—served as a proof of the worth of these pursuits, and it was done by Dr. Berk.
Dr. Berk has shown an unwavering commitment to his role as dean of our medical school during the last 17 years, during which time he has served in this capacity. After joining the TTUHSC faculty in 1999, he advanced rapidly through the ranks, ultimately becoming the regional dean of the Amarillo campus, a professor of medicine, and the holder of the Mirick-Myers Endowed Chair in Geriatric Medicine. He was also awarded the Mirick-Myers Endowed Chair in Geriatric Medicine in 1999. Dr. Berk was first appointed to the post of dean of the School of Medicine in 2006, and then in 2010, he was elevated to the role of executive vice president for Clinical Affairs at the institution.
