After graduating from Beaufort High School, she met Alvah Braxton Taylor, her soulmate. She was 21 and he was 30 when they married in 1955. “But ain’t he pretty,” she exclaimed when told she married an elderly guy. Her superb teeth, grin, and cheerful nature made her attractive. They lived with Braxton’s late mother, Angeline Salter Taylor. “She doesn’t even know how to boil water,” Mammy wept during their wedding. She became a great baker and cook. She loved sharing her peanut butter balls, rum balls, and fruit cake sweets at Christmas. Kathryn’s sense of humor and ability to relate to anybody will be remembered. “I’d love to take you home, sit you on my lap and rock you while feeding you cookies” was her favorite statement, generally intended at guys. Her colorful crocs and vivid clothes showed her exuberance. She made people chuckle by pointing out her weaknesses.
Kathryn focused on motherhood and homemaking. She clearly loved her children. Even in her last days, she insisted she couldn’t go because she had to take care of her children. Her grandkids and great-grandchildren inherited her love and dedication. After her children were grown, she worked at Sea Level Hospital and Extended Care Facility, Carteret Health Care Sea Level Pharmacy, and Pruitt Health Care, retiring in various roles. She liked people and made great friends there.
