Florian Mika Obituary, Death Cause – We were unaware that Florian Pilkington-Mika had passed away on May 20 until I brought up his name in this post just two days ago. It is with profound grief that I relay the news of his passing, as I was unaware of his passing until I brought up his name. My dear friend Florian was also a musician who used to play in my first band, which was called Metro. His tenure as the band Curved Air’s original drummer is largely responsible for his widespread notoriety. He was an incredible drummer and a handsome man, on the inside as well as on the outside, and he had been touring with Curved Air for a significant amount of time up until very recently.
We recently discovered an old publicity shot for Metro, and I thought it would be interesting to share it with you. Florian is the gentleman who is pictured standing just behind me on the left side of the picture. He has long, flowing hair. This incredible man, whose life was taken far too soon, will continue to exist in my mind and heart in the shape of nothing but happy and lovely memories for as long as we live. You can find out what Curved Air singer Sonja Kristina thought of him by reading the passages that follow.
Sonja, her husband Stewart Copeland (of The Police, etc.), and Stewart’s brother Sean Lyons, who plays guitar for Metro, all lived together in Florian’s home in Roehampton while Florian was on tour with Metro. Sonja is married to Stewart Copeland, and Sean Lyons is Stewart’s brother. Because we were all friends at the time, Stewart was given the opportunity to participate on two tracks with Metro for a one-off project called Public Zone. This project was a “off-shoot” of Metro at the time. My love and admiration for you, Florian, will accompany you wherever the light of your brilliance shines.
