Rita Marie Darrah (Bourque), our kind, sweet, brave, kind, and impossibly generous wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away at the ripe old age of 98 after a long life that was lived to the fullest. The Darrah family announces her passing with tremendous grief and bittersweet appreciation, following a long life that was well lived.
Rita’s children Shawn, Joanne (Pitt), Debbie, Darlene (Elliott), Kevin, and Julie (Brooks), as well as her 12 granddaughters, 8 great grandchildren, brothers, sisters, and a large number of other relatives and friends, will always remember her. Rita was the oldest of 17 children and the first to pass away. She was born in Kapuskasing, Ontario on February 26, 1925, and reared in Rogersville, New Brunswick. Her parents, first husband Roy Campbell, son Larry, and dear Joe, her husband of 57 years, all passed away before her.
Rita’s childhood helped her develop the skills necessary for parenthood. She began caring for her younger brothers at a young age and periodically took on additional responsibilities, such as hunting and trapping, gathering berries, pulling weeds in the vegetable garden, and even tasting beer. In addition to that, it taught her how to stretch a dollar and make the most of whatever resources she had available to her. Under her watch, we were never short of anything, and she always ensured that she got her full by washing our plates if we didn’t finish our meals.
