Howard Benson Obituary, Death Cause – On Thursday, May 25th, at the age of 91, Howard Benson passed away quietly at his home, surrounded by his family and his loving wife, Sue. The Benson family wishes to express their deepest condolences to Sue and the rest of the family for their loss. 1932 is the year that Howard was born in Rockford, Illinois. After earning a degree in geology from Beloit College and joining the Benson Stone Company with his father and grandfather, Howard eventually became the company’s owner and president and served in those roles for a number of years.
He was a leader who was both realistic and forward-thinking, and he led our company through several decades of booms and recessions with great success. His business savvy and commitment to doing things the best way possible were his calling cards. His approach was unassuming, yet he was very effusive in his appreciation when it came to a job well done. He was the epitome of a consummate professional and never missed a day of work, regardless of the weather, so serving as a model for those who were employed by him.
Although Howard had a work ethic that was more traditional, he was fast to adapt to emerging technologies and stay current with the ever-evolving requirements of our patrons. He was given a little stone cutting shop as an inheritance, and he worked tirelessly to modernize and broaden its scope in order to penetrate new industries, such as those for building brick and stone, landscape stone, and eventually granite countertops. One of the first companies in Rockford to install a computer, as well as the first to install a CNC cutting machine for fabricating stone countertops, his was one of the pioneering companies in the city.
