Todd received his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Psychology from Mount Mercy University in Iowa, his Professional Diploma in Mortuary Science from the New England Institute of Funeral Service Arts and Sciences in Massachusetts in 1973, and his Master of Arts in Religion from the Athenaeum of Ohio (Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary). All of these degrees were earned separately.
Todd was a person who had a love affair that lasted for fifty years with both the funeral industry and the burial service industry. He readily recognized that he was not a “expert!” and also swiftly admitted that there was nothing about this profession or his life that he did not appreciate, nor was there anything in which he did not have an intense interest. Both of these admissions were made in the same sentence. When asked about his life, Todd had stated, “I have never done a day’s work in my life; it has all been fun and interesting.”
Todd possessed a special set of skills and took immense delight in the fact that he was able to provide care that was both respectful to the dead and compassionate to the living.
In 2005, the Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service in Houston, Texas presented him with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters Degree. Todd was licensed to practice in a number of jurisdictions and held a number of different certificates and licenses, including the Certified Funeral Service Practitioner (CFSP) and the Certified Funeral Executive (CFE) titles.
