June Shepherd Obituary, Death Cause – After a protracted battle with illness, our dear friend, coworker, sister, and comrade June Shepherd died away today in a quiet manner. It is with the heaviest of hearts that I write this letter to inform you of this tragic news. Since June had been a part of Unite and its predecessor unions for the better part of 26 years, we can say that she was an outstanding trade unionist.

At Sainsbury’s in Loughborough, where the union was starting from scratch, she worked her way up through the ranks, holding positions such as workplace rep, health and safety rep, and branch officer. June made it her mission to provide assistance for her members at every conceivable level inside the Company and the Union. She spared no effort to guarantee that her members were safeguarded and cared for while they were on the job.

Those who knew June will remember her as a strong woman who never stopped working hard for her members and doing everything it took to fight for them. She was also known for always having a friendly face and being there for anyone who required her assistance. No matter the hour or the day, she never failed to make sure that her friends and family were well and always checked in on them to see how they were doing.

After more than a decade of service, June finally decided to step down from her position as the East Midlands representative on the Executive Council this year. She witnessed the coming together of two of the most powerful trade unions in the world and did everything she could to help Unite evolve into the powerful organization that it is today, one that is not afraid to fight back.
Although June’s legacy will live on through all those who knew and were close to her, the flame in the East Midlands is lit faintly today because we have lost a genuinely great soul. June was one of the most decent people that I have ever had the honor and privilege of knowing.
